Southern STARRS, based in
NARHA’s operating standards, was co-founded by Terry and Saranne Winfield, who
participate as advisors to a 15-member Board of Directors, which includes
equine, health, media and legal professionals. It is supported by a broad range
of volunteers with experience in horse care, physical and recreational therapy
and disability training, and collaborates with other area youth service
organizations.
The non-profit status of
Southern STARRS allows the facility to open its program to any individual
(minimum age is 3 year old) who have been diagnosed with a physical or mental
disability free of charge. Parents or guardians may contact the facility for
appropriate forms and a facility volunteer will contact them with further
information. STARRS now has a completed barn with an indoor riding ring and
this is the first year the program will be able to be open with year-round
consistent scheduling. The program currently offers classes on Saturday
mornings and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings in 12-week sessions.
